If you keep a lot of filter media in your pond, the water will be clean and the Koi will be healthy.


Bacteria change the waste products of marine animals into nitrates, which are less dangerous. This is how lakes and rivers work on their own. In a Koi pond, you can find these germs on the walls of the pond, on the inside of the pipes, on skimmer baskets, etc.


When we build biological systems, it's important to think about what kind of filter media to use so that bacteria can colonise more of the surface area. The most important thing is to keep harmful chemicals and trash out of our ponds while keeping the good bugs in.
