Frequently Asked Questions
Are UV Clarifiers needed for ponds?
Whilst they aren't necessary for keeping your pond filtered, they can help with reducing green water. As the water passes through the UV clarifier, the algae bind together to form larger particles that can be captured by your mechanical filter media. These are the most effective ways to ensure your pond water remains crystal clear, giving you the best view of your koi.
Are pond electrical switch boxes useful?
Pond switch boxes are designed to act as a central hub for all your pond electrics, such as pond pumps, UVCs, air pumps and lighting. They allow you to isolate and turn off individual electrical units when they require maintenance without the need to unplug from the mains, shutting everything down. They're also incredibly useful for keeping your pond area tidy and safe, as each unit is waterproof and can be installed close to the pond.
We do recommend, however, when installing a pond switch box, that you use a professional electrician.
Are pond heat pumps needed for keeping koi?
Pond heat pumps are great for keeping your pond at a consistent temperature, which can be particularly useful during the winter to avoid your pond freezing over and to keep your koi’s immune systems active.
Whilst koi can be kept in an unheated pond, koi enter a state of torpor where their immune systems essentially shut down, which makes them vulnerable to diseases in the spring (often called spring viraemia). Heat pumps essentially reduce this risk.
What is a pond oxidation unit for?
Pond oxidation units, often using Ozone, are designed to chemically break down organic pollutants that your filter may have missed. They act as a secondary filter system that can improve water clarity, remove harmful bacteria and dissolve organic compounds that may affect your koi's growth.
