Frequently Asked Questions
Why are dechlorinators needed for koi ponds?
Chlorine is added to tap water to make it safe for humans to drink, but it can be very toxic to fish as it is designed to remove bacteria. If your koi is left in chlorinated water, the chemical can strip the protective membrane and cause damage to a koi's gill filaments, which reduces its ability to process dissolved oxygen. Dechlorinators remove the harmful chlorine from tap water, making it safe for your fish.
What is Malachite Green?
Malachite Green is a common treatment for fungal and external parasite issues with koi. When treating your pond using Malachite Green, we recommend you follow the instructions on the bottle and ensure you know the volume of water you are treating to avoid overdosing the pond, potentially harming your koi.
When treating your pond with Malachite Green, you will also need to remove your carbon filters, as these are designed to remove chemicals. When using malachite green, you will notice your pond will have a deep green hue, which is totally normal and will clear after a few days.
Are green water treatments effective?
Green water treatments, often called flocculants, can be very effective in reducing the pea green algae soup in your pond. They are designed to bind the free-floating algae so that your mechanical filter media captures them as the water flows through your filter.
Should I add aquatic salt to my pond?
It depends; salt can have many benefits for your pond. It reduces stress in your fish, can help improve water treatments, and can help fish with osmotic shock (fluid imbalance). If you are treating your pond with aquatic salt, you must avoid overdosing by following the instructions precisely. If you have added too much salt or are looking to re-salt your pond, you must complete a 20% water change beforehand. Always check medication labels before adding salt, as some treatments do not mix well
